Making Strides - WIN & Omega-3s

SPONSOR ME! This will be my 9th Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. I do this walk in honor of my aunt Virgina Saguing, my cousin, Natalie Nobida, who passed away this May, and the single mother of a good friend, Maureen Withrow. MSABC is the official sponsor of birthdays. Celebrate those birthdays of being cancer free, fighting cancer by being healthy, active and spreading the word. Take a moment to review what you've accomplished, the simple fact of being able to have great experiences and create new memories with friends and loved ones. A lot can happen to a person in one year's time. Appreciate it. Push forward for another year.

Did you know that every 3 minutes another woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer?

85% of women who get breast cancer have NO family history of breast cancer.

4 women die every hour from breast cancer

The MOST common cancer in women, no matter your race or ethnicity.

The MOST common cause of death from cancer among Hispanic women.

The SECOND most common cause of death from cancer among white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander and American Indian/Alaska Native women.

Approximately 10% of those diagnosed with breast cancer have no lumps, pain or other indications of problem in their breasts.

Not entirely genetic: Just 5-10% of cases are due to faulty breast cancer genes BRCA1 and BRCA2.

Most breast cancers have been present for 6 to 8 years by the time they appear on mammograms, and screening misses up to 20% of all tumors.

Women under 50 years old account for 25% of all breast cancer cases.

Many more studies are being done before the claims that Omega 3 aids in the prevention of breast cancer is proven, but the evidence of current research tends to support just that. There are many studies and reports that point to the benefits of Omega 3 and breast cancer prevention. Here are the facts.
Fact #1 -- Women who eat foods rich in Omega 3 regularly are less likely to develop breast cancer

Of course all experts don't agree, but many studies indicate that women who have eaten a diet high in Omega 3 fatty acids over a period of many years, are less like likely to develop breast cancer. Women in the study consumed more foods that were high in Omega 3 like salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring, halibut, striped bass, tuna, and lake trout.

Other foods that were high on the dietary list of women with lower rates of breast cancer were flaxseed, kidney beans, great northern beans, navy beans, and soybeans.
Fact #2 -- The risk of dying from breast cancer is significantly less

Women who often substitute fish for meat and have a diet high in brown kelp seaweed have a higher percentage of surviving breast cancer. Scientists have discovered the balance of Omega 3 and Omega 6 is very important. Women who develop breast cancer have a higher percentage of Omega 6 than Omega 3. By consuming more foods that are high in Omega 3, this balance can be kept at optimal levels.
Fact #3 -- The combination of Omega 3 and other nutrients play a role in breast cancer prevention

While studies indicate that a diet high in Omega 3 is effective in preventing breast cancer, researchers also state that it is most likely a combination of Omega 3 and other nutrients like vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, selenium, a Co Q10.

Studies aren't conclusive that a diet high in Omega 3 will prevent breast cancer, but it's a good starting point. If you are concerned about preventing breast cancer, a diet high in healthy foods containing Omega 3 certainly doesn't hurt!
